Common Issues in Teens and Young Adults (Ages 12-25)

Teens and young adults face many challenges as they grow and figure out who they are. Therapy can help them deal with these issues and learn ways to manage their emotions. Below are some common problems that teens and young adults often talk about in counseling:

Anxiety & Depression

Many young people feel anxious or sad because of school stress, social situations, or worrying about the future. This can look like:

  • Being afraid of social situations or performing in front of others

  • Constant worrying about different things

  • Feeling sad, hopeless, or losing interest in things they used to enjoy

Therapy can help them learn ways to handle these feelings and feel better.

Identity & Self-Discovery

This time of life is about figuring out who they are. Many young people think about:

  • Gender identity and sexual orientation

  • How they feel about themselves and their body

  • Finding their purpose and what makes them unique

For some, this might mean coming out or finding a safe space to be themselves.

Relationships & Social Problems

Social life can be hard, especially for teens. Some common challenges include:

  • Peer pressure or trying to fit in

  • Issues with friends, bullying, or online bullying

  • Understanding and setting boundaries in romantic or sexual relationships

Counseling helps them build confidence, communicate better, and deal with social stress.

School & Future Stress

Teens and young adults often feel a lot of pressure from school, college decisions, and planning for their future. Therapy can help them with:

  • Managing school stress and performance anxiety

  • Preparing for big changes, like starting high school or college

  • Setting realistic goals for the future

Substance Use

Some young people may try drugs or alcohol to cope with stress, fit in, or handle emotional pain. Therapy can help them find healthier ways to deal with their feelings.

Managing Emotions & Coping Skills

Learning how to deal with strong emotions is an important life skill. Many teens and young adults struggle with:

  • Managing anger, frustration, or sadness

  • Understanding their emotions and expressing them in healthy ways

  • Finding ways to cope with stress

Family Conflicts

It’s common for teens to have disagreements with parents or siblings as they try to become more independent. Counseling can help with:

  • Improving communication with family members

  • Setting healthy boundaries

  • Dealing with changes like divorce or remarriage

Trauma & Abuse

Some teens and young adults have gone through difficult or painful experiences, such as abuse or trauma. Therapy can help them process these events and heal.

Body Image & Eating Issues

Many young people feel pressure to look a certain way, which can lead to problems like:

  • Eating disorders, such as not eating enough or eating too much

  • Having a negative body image or low self-esteem

  • Learning to have a healthy relationship with food and exercise

Grief, Loss & Life Changes

Young people also go through big life changes, like losing a loved one, moving to a new place, or leaving home for the first time. Therapy helps them deal with these changes and feelings of loss.

Mental Health Conditions

Some teens and young adults might need support for specific mental health issues, such as:

  • ADHD

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Therapy provides tools to manage these conditions and improve daily life.

By addressing these common challenges, therapy can help teens and young adults learn how to manage their feelings, build strength, and face life’s ups and downs with confidence.
